Abstract

This article analyzes Henry David Thoreau's environmental humanism as presented in Walden, focusing particularly on the penultimate chapter's call for preserving nature's wildness. The paper explores how this call is the logical outcome of Thoreau’s thinking in the final chapters of Walden, specifically 'The Pond in Winter' and 'Spring.' The article argues that these chapters offer a sustained exploration of three competing modes of environmental awareness: denial of materiality in the name of humanism, misguided materialism, and true materialism. This study examines how Thoreau's charting of Walden Pond, the ice-cutters’ harvest of the Walden ice, and the flowing sandbank passage exemplify these modes. The author contends that these passages should be read as rhetorical arguments rather than merely seasonal narratives, demonstrating a progression from idealism to a more fully realized form of humanism grounded in symbolism. This work investigates the significance of Thoreau's environmental consciousness for contemporary ecological thought.
