Abstract

Palgrave Advances in Henry James Studies, edited by Peter Rawlings, offers a comprehensive exploration of Henry James's literary legacy and its ongoing influence on contemporary criticism. Comprising thirteen essays from leading scholars, this volume serves both specialists and newcomers to Jamesian studies. The collection provides a chronological overview of key developments in James scholarship, highlighting the evolution of critical approaches and their impact on current interpretations of James as an author, critic, and theorist. Notable contributions by Sheila Teahan, Eric Savoy, Julie H. Rivkin, Pierre A. Walker, and Greg W. Zacharias offer insightful analyses that contextualize existing criticism while suggesting future directions for research. The essays engage in a dialogue with one another, building on previous arguments to form a cohesive narrative of James's intellectual contributions. Teahan’s opening essay, "Mastering Critical Theory," sets the stage by examining James’s pivotal role in shaping critical theory and his interplay between aesthetic theory and fiction. This volume not only consolidates past scholarship but also anticipates new avenues for understanding James’s enduring relevance in literary studies.
