Abstract

This article analyzes Rolando Hinojosa's foray into detective fiction, exploring his creative process and the cultural context of his work. The author examines Hinojosa's well-known production in Chicano literature, focusing on his two detective novels, Partners in Crime (1985) and Ask a Policeman (1998). The article argues that Hinojosa's use of the detective genre reflects the socio-economic changes in South Texas, particularly the rise of drug smuggling and its impact on local communities. Through an interview with Hinojosa, the paper explores his inspirations, influences from other mystery writers, and his approach to character development. The study demonstrates how Hinojosa's work bridges high and low culture, offering a unique perspective on life along the U.S.-Mexico border.
