Abstract

This review analyzes Justin Chadwick’s 2008 film The Other Boleyn Girl, adapted from the bestselling novel by Philippa Gregory. The study posits that while the film delivers visually sumptuous aesthetics and strong individual performances from Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson , it ultimately privileges style over substance. By compressing complex historical events into a simplified narrative of sibling rivalry , the film misses the opportunity to explore how these relationships shaped the British nation. Furthermore, the analysis examines the problematic representation of the central love triangle , demonstrating how a complicated web of familial coercion and sexual violence is depicted through an alarmingly simplistic lens. Ultimately, the review concludes that despite its notable transatlantic production value , the film remains merely adequate rather than outstanding.
