Abstract

This study explores Joanna Russ's seminal work, The Female Man (1975), through the lens of science fiction and feminist concerns. As a notable author and critic within the genre, Russ consistently highlights that despite science fiction's potential to create alternative realities, most texts are authored by men from a male perspective, excluding female identities with power and agency. In this context, The Female Man serves as a platform for Russ to challenge these misogynist attitudes in science fiction. This article argues that The Female Man reflects Russ's ambition to redefine the content and form of science fiction, an aspiration that is evident in her exploration of themes, plot structures, and narrative techniques designed to create a more liberating environment for women.
