Abstract

In *Inside the Writers' Room: Conversations with American Television Writers*, Christina Kallas explores the creative processes behind television dramas through insightful interviews with key industry figures. By shifting focus from traditional textual or historical analyses, Kallas offers a production-oriented perspective that elevates the status of televisual narratives. She begins by contrasting cinema and television, challenging conventional hierarchies between these mediums. Drawing on Robert J. Thompson’s concept of "quality television" and Kristin Thompson's notion of "art television," Kallas argues for a more inclusive definition of cinema as a state of mind rather than a fixed medium or format. This perspective not only blurs the boundaries between film and television but also invites reconsideration of how we classify audio-visual art forms in an era of rapidly evolving media consumption habits. As audiences increasingly turn to streaming platforms, web series, and mobile devices for entertainment, Kallas's work prompts us to question whether cinematic experiences can extend beyond traditional screens. Her exploration of the writers' room dynamics provides valuable insights into American television culture while advocating for a more expansive understanding of what constitutes cinema in contemporary media landscapes.
