Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013)
Keywords:
Mako Mori, Pacific Rim, gender politics, action heroine, Hollywood norms, Mako Mori TestAbstract
This article analyzes the character of Mako Mori in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim (2013) as a progressive female action protagonist who subverts traditional Hollywood norms. The paper explores how Mori's gender and nationality are presented, highlighting her avoidance of 'musculinity' and the institutionalization of sexual equality within the film's narrative. This study examines the significance of the absence of a kiss between Mori and Raleigh Becket, arguing that it reflects del Toro's conscious creative choices to challenge conventional tropes. The article demonstrates how Mori's character has inspired critical consideration through the Mako Mori Test, an alternative to the Bechdel Test, which evaluates the strength of female characters in film. By investigating Mori's transformation from a passive bystander to a proactive warrior, the author contends that her portrayal challenges binary gender roles and contributes to the evolution of equal gender representation in action cinema.(The abstract and keywords were prepared retrospectively for indexing purposes using AI-assisted tools and editorial review, based on the original article.
