Abstract

In Cinemas of the Other: A Personal Journey with Filmmakers from the Middle East and Central Asia, Gönül Dönmez-Colin explores cinematic representations of non-Western nations in the Islamic Middle East and Central Asia. The book interrogates how these regions, often perceived through Eurocentric lenses as remote and alien, challenge dominant mainstream cinema both within and outside their borders. Through personal interviews with filmmakers during her travels, Colin provides a nuanced account of alternative filmmaking practices. She argues that these cinemas not only resist Western hegemony but also offer unique perspectives on identity, culture, and politics in the region. The dual meaning of "the other" in the book's title—referring to both non-Western nations and their distinct cinematic traditions—highlights the complexity of representation and resistance. Colin’s work contributes significantly to cinema studies by foregrounding marginalized voices and challenging conventional narratives about these regions. Her approach underscores the importance of personal engagement with filmmakers, offering readers a deeper understanding of the cultural and political contexts shaping these cinemas.
